Product Review: Ranch Style Black Beans

Beans are known for their many health qualities and as a vegetarian staple food item. But what about black beans? Are they worth trying? This article will review Ranch Style Black Beans and see whether they can compete with the better known pinto beans, chickpeas and haricot beans.

I am familiar with a wide variety of lentils, beans and peas, as they have been a staple in my diet since infancy. But I had not tried black beans until more recently. While I was out shopping a few months ago, I was scanning the shelves for a different type of bean to
try for a change. I noticed Ranch Style Black Beans. The front of the can featured a bowl of prepared black beans sprinkled with chopped onion. I was curious as to what these beans would taste like. I asked my husband if he had ever tried Ranch Style Black Beans before. He had not tried them before, so I was unsure about whether I should buy them. But I decided that the beans were worth a try. After all, the 425g can cost only $0.37. So I did not have a lot to lose if I did not like the Ranch Style Black Beans.

As canned beans are notoriously high in sodium, I made sure to thoroughly rinse and drain all the excess liquid from the beans before serving them. When I tasted the beans I was impressed with the taste. They did not taste markedly different from other beans such as pinto beans. I made a mental note to make sure that I added Ranch Style Black Beans to my shopping list in future.

It must get so annoying for you Lori when people ask you about whether you are getting enough protein. There's so much on the market that caters to the vegetarian lifestyle. Sophie

I eat this brand of black beans very often, but I pay $0.50 per can :( As a vegetarian, one of the questions I sometimes get is the old "do you get enough protein?" Check out the protein for one serving of these beans!

Good review. I don't often use canned beans, but for a salad these sound like a great product.

Thanks for the comments. These beans add a nice contrast to salads, which I like. I have to admit that I did not think I would like them at first, but I do. Sophie

I love most beans, but not the black ones. There's just something icky about them. Maybe it's the color. You have to admit it's unappealing. :-D
