Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born on August 9, 1963, in Newark, New Jersey. She has two brothers, Michael and Gary. Her mother, Cissy (Emily) Houston, was a Rhythm and Blues singer. A little known fact about singer Whitney Houston is that her cousin is the legendary Dionne Warwick. So it's no wonder that she grew up to become a singer herself. Her Career
On Valentine's Day of 1985, Houston's self-titled debut album was released by Arista Records. Hits included "You Give Good Love," "How Will I Know," "Saving All My Love For You" and "The Greatest Love of All." The album sold more than 22,000,000 copies and earned Houston two Grammy Awards and two Billboard Music Awards. Naturally, mother Cissy was a backup singer on the album.

After that came "Whitney" in 1987 and "I'm Your Baby Tonight" in 1990. Both albums failed to perform as well as the first. Still, though, they won Whitney Houston even more awards, money and fame.

Her Film Career
Whitney Houston starred in "The Bodyguard" opposite Kevin Costner in 1992. "I Have Nothing," "I'm Every Woman" and "I Will Always Love You" became hits for Houston off the movie soundtrack. The latter became so popular that sales blew through the roof. It's one of the best-selling albums ever. She also starred with Denzel Washington in "The Preacher's Wife" in 1996.

A little known fact about singer Whitney Houston is that she was inducted into the "Soul Train Music Awards Hall of Fame" in 1996.
