The United Kingdom's The Guardian has assigned each state a "road song." However, it looks as though they did nothing but search an extensive database of song lyrics and assign songs that contain the state name.

Here are some major critiques of their choices:

Alabama

Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynrd

A big thumbs up for this assignment.

Arizona

Arizona by Kings of Leon

Thumbs down. This song is way too annoying for some. A good choice for this state? Take It Easy by The Eagles for the line, "Standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona."

California

California Girls by The Beach Boys

Thumbs down. It is a catchy tune. It does talk about California. However, it's definitely not a good song for a California road song. Not everybody dreams of females. Not everybody surfs. How about California Dreamin' by the Mams and the Papas? How about California Here I Come by Al Jolson

Delaware

Delaware by Perry Como

Thumbs up for this catchy tune. Como not only plays on the name of Delaware, but other state names. It's a song full of laughs and one that works well as a sing along on car trips, too. Why can't other states be so lucky?

Georgia

Midnight Train to Georgia by Gladys Night and the Pips

Thumbs down, even though it's a lovely and classic song. A better choice? Georgia on My Mind by Ray Charles

Hawaii

Blue Hawaii by Elvis Presley

Thumbs up for this classic. Plus, it's an Elvis song. There's no losing there, especially with the recent connections this can make with Lilo and Stitch.

Indiana

(Back Home Again in) Indiana by Louis Armstrong

Thumbs down as this is a total instrumental song. It is quite upbeat. How about Gary, Indiana from The Music Man?

Louisiana

Johnny B. Goode by Chuck Berry

Thumbs down for this choice. It does mention Louisiana, but there are better songs. Why not anything by Louis Armstrong when New Orleans is the birthplace of Jazz? Why no zydeco (Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler is the Cajun National Anthem)? Even, why not Louisiana's state song, You Are My Sunshine by Jimmie Davis. Eventually it has the line, "Louisiana, my Louisiana."

Nebraska

Nebraska by Bruce Springsteen

How could Sinatra's "New York, New York" not make this list?

Did You Know?
When John Denver wrote Take Me Home, Country Roads, he had never been to West Virginia.
Governer Jimmie Davis wrote You Are My Sunshine for his horse.

For Tennessee, I would pick John Hiatt's "Tennessee Plates." In fact, I play that song every time I drive into Tennessee.

Didn't realize they were so many songs about states. I learned quite a few new songs I didn't know about.

I'll disagree with you on the NY theme song. Walk on the Wild Side is highly representative of the New York scene. Although, I'm sure I could think of a Ramones song or two that might work just as well.

Great job, Bridget! What a fun article topic!

PS: Oh yes Jolson's "California here I come..." was included in my road trip mixtape. I think "Rambling Man" by Allman Brothers is another good state song.

Georgia on My Mind, right choice. I would take Arrested Developments "Tennessee" but don't know Simon's song and sounds like Elvis, so doubt I would like it; although his version of Viva Las Vegas is a fav old tune. I also do not know the Protector, but a definite yes on Denver's tune, which makes me think of Colorado and Rocky Mountain High. I could not get beyond "what did Della wear, she wore a brand New Jersey" any other state songs. It is so nice of the UK to make the list and GREAT fun article!

Let me guess Springsteen's "Jersey Girl" and I agree, Reed over Joel is a better road song. Sinatra's is classic and I would listen to "Native New Yorker" on a road trip. California? "Let me welcome everybody to the wild, wild west the state that's untouchable like Elliot Ness" is a fav California song. That, and "Warm California Sun" "I'm going out west where I belong..." helped keep me awake when I took that first long road trip cross country. When my daughter made the reverse trip she sent me a Post Card from Winslow AZ and wrote "I'm standing on a corner...". Definite thumbs up on that one.

I guess we need to keep in mind that the list came from the U.K. Maybe they're still mad at us over this "independence" thing. Why don't we strike back by assigning songs to different parts of the United Kingdom? I wonder how they'd feel if we picked "London Bridge Is Falling Down" as representative of England?

As a native New Yorker, I can't believe the song they chose. How offensive and idiotic. They should have polled each state's residents so they'd have a song that was truly representative. Geez!

What, no road song for Michigan? Hmm, is there a song about pot holes? lol
