When most people think bathroom makeovers, they think of getting a new shower curtain, right? You could head to Target or Wal-Mart and pick out a nice nautical theme, or maybe a curtain that looks like an aquarium. But then, your bathroom would look just like all the rest.

Instead of starting with the shower curtain and the towels or the toothbrush holder, take some time and start your bathroom makeover from another point. Don't settle for a prepackaged set with an anchor theme or a bunch of frogs on it. Take a little bit of time in planning, and you'll be able to impress all of your friends and make them think you went to design school.

The first thing you'll want to do is find a focal piece. A good focal piece can be anything really - a piece of art that you like, some black and white photos, or a small apothecary chest you found at an antique shop. Generally - these are the pieces that are added after the fact. The pictures placed on the wall of the bathroom after you've found a shower curtain and matching wastebasket.

Think about the popular home design shows that you see on the Learning Channel. Do those designers settle for easy ideas. No, they usually find some piece of furniture or piece of art that becomes the base for the rest of the room.

Spend some time browsing through your local antique stores. Look for any interesting pieces that might catch your eye. Or another good place to start is a store like Cost Plus World Market. I love the variety and style you can find in that store. There are so many interesting pieces of art and furniture in there that might serve as a great jumping off point.

Besides interesting pieces of furniture or wooden giraffes from Cost Plus - think about some type of vintage art poster. These can be great pieces for bathrooms as the colors are generally vibrant and eye catching. If you use them as a sort of centerpiece to base your bathroom plans off of, they will give you a lot of options as far as colors and style go.
