The Univac was the First Commercial Computer Circa 1950
The father of all modern computers was the ENIAC, which was a pervious article I wrote here, and from that first super computer sprang many computer systems. Each have a place in our history but there are just some that stand out more then the others and the Univac is such a system.
The Univac was the first commercial computer available and it was a nice one for those times. It was beyond successful in sales. A solid-state computer that made business owners take notice of it. There was no denying the fact that this commercial computer had a place in the market. The rest as they say is computer history.
One of the largest factors in the success of UNIVAC I was the groundbreaking input-output gear offered with it. It was one of the first computers that used magnetic tapes to input and output information. Trust me this was a big deal back then when computers were cumbersome by today's standards. Magnetic tape is still used but only for the super computers; more generally, even big businesses are turning towards other modes.
Those magnetic tapes were created by hand with a Unityper and the information was also was printed out by a Uniprinter. A keyboard and a typewriter also came with the UNIVAC I computer to get information into and out of the computer. However, these two devices were not running when the computer was being used. How strange is that?
Today's input and output devices such as the mouse, keyboard and printer that we all take for granted are used in conjunction with the computer when it is running. Our printer light maybe on when the computer is off but it needs the computer to tell it what to do and how to do it, there fore it will not run unless the computer is on.
It is hard to believe there was a time, not so long ago that there were not computers in every business or even every home. Now days with technology changes it is possible to run almost any size of business right from your home. I find that fascinating and when you think about all the changes computer have went thru in just the past 10 years or so it is mind boggling.
