If you have a history of problems such as Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, Hypertension or Age Related Macular Degeneration, then the Optomap scan is essential for helping to keep an "eye" on your condition. If any of these problems are in your family, it can aid in early detection and thus you can commence early treatment. You can have an Optomap taken even if you have cataracts, glaucoma, small pupils or don't like bright lights.

An Optomap Retinal Exam views up to 90% of the retina. In comparison, traditional eye exams can only see about 30% of the retina. This wider view can spot problems while they are small. The Optomap exam shows areas of the retina that can help diagnose potential retinal detachments and diseases that not only affect the eye but many other parts of the body, long before they would otherwise have become noticeable by giving a clear view to blood vessels without skin being in the way. Because of this, an Optomap exam can be used to examine the health of the retina and check for signs of conditions such as:

1. Diabetic Retinopathy - Diabetes affects the small vessels of your eyes and kidneys. For more information, visit http://www.diabetes.org.uk
2. Hypertension (high blood pressure) - For more information, visit http://www.hyp.ac.uk
3. Age Related Macular Degeneration - The macula is the central part of the retina, and this can become diseased as we get older, resulting in alterations to our central vision which can make normal daily activities, such as driving and reading, difficult. For more information, visit http://www.maculardisease.org
4. Glaucoma - Also associated with diabetes.
