And the Emmy Goes To..

And the Emmy goes to..... I am excited about the answer to that in the category of Outstanding Leading Actress in a Drama Series. While I am not usually an active Emmy watcher, I am very curious about this one part. While all the nominated actresses are superb, there is one that stands out above the rest. I can sum up why in three words: Brenda Leigh Johnson. Kyra Sedgwick is brilliant in this role on the TNT's The Closer.

I have always thought that Sally Field is terrific in everything she does. Minnie Driver has a comic edge that leaves me in stitches. Patricia Arquette leaves her impression upon my mind with her ghost visits. But Kyra Sedgwick leaves me laughing, crying, sympathizing and talking about the character well after the show ends. I just think that the character is so well portrayed that I forget that it is a TV show.

I haven't really seen Brothers & Sisters, but I have seen the other shows in this category. I think that Edie Falco, Patricia Arquette, Minnie Driver, Sally Field, and Mariska Hargitay are all very, very good actresses. Each of them puts off a performance that is hard to top each and every week. They are strong in the roles that they play. However, the range of acting is small and consistent episode to episode. That is not the case with The Closer.

Kyra Sedgwick leaves everything on the table and then some. Her character goes through so many moods that not many actresses could keep up. But Ms. Sedgwick does and does it with such flair. She pulls off a southern accent that not many can do. I thought that was her normal voice, but that shows how great of an actress she really is. Going from being totally on your side to totally against you in a heartbeat is the way the Closer gets confessions from criminals. She is very, very good at this. And Kyra Sedgwick is the reason why. Brenda Leigh Johnson is a bright, strong leader. And Ms. Sedgwick makes that character totally believable in everyway. As for police dramas, Brenda Leigh Johnson is one of the roundest characters that I have ever seen. She is tough, yet human. The flaws are shown as well as the characters strengths.
