Two Thumbs Down for Me

I've never been a fan of scary movies or haunted houses. I lived on an island in Texas and every Halloween; there were haunted houses everywhere. I had 3 brothers and 3 sisters that loved to go. I always went along but it was very difficult for me. I remember being little and scared. I cried so much that a vampire had to carry me out of there!

It's the whole suspense thing that I can't get over. Not knowing what's around the corner or when it's going to pop out scares me even if nothing ever happens. It got to be where I chose more and more to skip those ghoulish houses and stay home and watch the Disney movie of the night!

In my late 20's I was a professional working in a nice office building downtown in Houston. Our work group thought it would be a great idea to convert a few offices into a haunted house. They hung black trash bags from the ceiling to create the darkness and a maze pattern. Recalling my fear, I thought now that I'm older, I should have no problem so I thought it would be fun to face my old fears. I shared my fear with a few people and one of the men that I worked with promised to stay immediately in front of me so I could hide behind him if I needed to. As soon as the office door closed behind me, he took off leaving me for dead!

I remember seeing glowing green eyes and hearing all the screams. I started to panic and thought that if I just crouched down, they wouldn't know I was there. They were probably trying to grab where they thought I'd be standing so I hunched down to the ground then, yes... I started to cry. Someone grabbed me freaking me out more then pulled me out of there to rescue me. Like the vampire when I was a kid, I was once again rescued from the darkness of death!

Needless to say, the office staff had a great time with my fears. When I arrived to work the next day, I had cobwebs strewn about my desk with fake spiders all over the place. Some spiders were even on my phone receivers. They also left a little poem to display what they thought was funny.

To this day, I won't step foot in a haunted house or watch a scary movie. I even shield this from my children who are both over 11 years old.

Debra, do you ever plan on coming back here to pick up your soapbox....

These are fine for people who like them, which sounds stupid I know... But it makes my point. What fries me is when some of those who do think that everyone must and will drag in people who don't want to go. Or when those who are afraid are mocked or targeted. It's incredibly low of someone to take advantage of another in their moment of weakness. I don't think I could ever forgive someone for deciding that my fear was not a sign that I needed help but was instead their cue to finish me off. It's a good indicator of how my regard that person has for their fellow humans when they are so quick to exploit power over them. I haven't seen any proof that these haunted houses serve any better purpose.

I currently work as an actor at the House of Horrors/Haunted Catacombs in Buffalo New York. It's quite easy and rather satisfying for me to dispense the scares, however I begin to get a bit unnerved when I am on the receiving end. I suppose in some round about way becoming what frightens me is a way of conquering my fears. Also my dear, if your as easily terrified as you say you are, staying out of haunted attractions is a wise choice indeed. I have an insiders knowledge that those who are obviously scared are ALWAYS relentlessly targeted.

Great article! We are having a haunted house fundraising party at our house on October 20th to help raise funds for the Leukemia Society. But we are limiting our guests to adults only so I don't have to worry about freaking out the neighborhood kids. We'll have an outdoors graveyard setup for the kids but that will be pretty tame.

Great article! Certain scary films are alright, but others are just too much. Haunted houses don't usually do much for me lol.

I love scary films, but I only watch them on DVD at home. I get startled at times, and I tend scream a lot so it can be embarrassing---that is why I do not watch scary films outside the comfort of my home :)

Haunted houses are usually pretty cheesy (at least the ones in my area). I do believe that horror films plant seeds of fear in people. Young children should never be allowd to watch them. That being said as I have grown older I have no fear. After having five kids what could be more frightening? :) BRING IT ON FREDDY!

Good reminders! Some people just don't find this kind of thing to their liking and it's best to err on the side of sensitivity. :)

You hit the nail on the head for me. My husband and I love haunted houses but my son who is almost a teen hates them with a passion! He loves to tag along to see all the creatures lurking outside of the haunted house but once we get inside he is so afraid. So now we take him and someone else who doesn't want to go in. That way he can look around outside but doesn't have to go in. Great article!
