Not too long ago, Asperger's Syndrome was finally introduced to the general public through a movie entitled, Mozart and the Whale. Earlier, autism was finally introduced to the general public throug the movie, Rain Man.

Now, another movie comes on the scene that seems like it may deal with a subject in this area.

A six-year-old boy seems to spend all his time in a box. Everybody around says, "He lives in the box," and he is simply known as "The Boy in the Box."

A struggling science fiction writer, played by John Cusack, happens upon this boy. The writer is depressed from his wife's recent death and decides to adopt the boy in order to try to start a family. He does not want his own children, but he asks, "How do you argue against loving a child that's already here?"

Martian Child does not seem like it will prove to be only a feel good movie. There looks to be trouble between the adoptive father and the social workers. What happens is unknown.

We can only guess the outcome. Those of us who want a feel good movie will hope that the father gets to keep the boy with some easy explanations. However, from the feel of the trailers, it does not seem that this will be the case. It seems like this struggling science fiction writer will have a lot of real life struggles once he adopts this boy who truly believes he is from Mars. He'll also have a lot of love.

For those who want things to go poorly, we can only guess that the boy will be taken by social workers and put into state custody or worse. Hopefully the movie will not go this way. If this does happen, hopefully the boy will get to return "home" and learn how to be a human on Earth.

At least we know that he will not be living in a box in the streets. That gives all potential viewers hope for this movie. The plots seems to be solid. The actors and actresses are superb.

Based on the novel Martian Child by David Gerrold, screenplay written by Seth Bass and Jonathan Tolins, and directed by Menno Meyjes, Martian Child hits the big screens in November 2007. Check your local theaters for play times.
