Israel Has the Same Right to Defend Itself as Does America
We all remember September 11, 2001. Most of us will never forget where we were when we heard about the 18 terrorists who flew planes into the two World Trade Center Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and the plane that crashedNo doubt that day changed America's history. We will forever be on guard against future incidents. Would you like to live in a country, however, that has been a victim of countless terrorist incidents since its very founding? Would you feel at peace knowing that any day someone you love might be killed in such an incident or that you might be killed? Israel has known what it is like to be the victim of terrorism, sometimes on a daily basis, for a lot longer than the United States of America—and the terrorism has been so strong that country's very survival has been at stake.
While America has had a long history of being Israel's strongest ally, nevertheless since the war in Iraq President Bush has made comments about Israel showing restraint when attacked by terrorists, and those comments are wrong. I may generally support President Bush and his policies, but Israel has as much right to defend itself as does America.

Mostly what I remember is that militant Palestinians cheered and passed out candy when Americans were incinerated in the World Trade Center bombings...
Your headline should read "America should stand WITH Israel in the fight against terror--in which case I agree with you. Moderate Arabs want peace,and so does the Israelis, but the extremist anti semites won't be happy until (like Nazi Ahmadinajad) they "wipe Israel off the map." Create security for the moderates and you'll have peace in the region.

this article ignores a) the blockade that is slowly starving palestinians and depriving them of much needed medical supplies and JOURNALISM to tell THEIR STORY which is so important in the court of public opinion for people to know the real story! b) the ever-expanding israeli settlements aided by armed military personal displacing people from their homes c) bulldozing of palestinian homes for no reasons...destroying farms and peoples' way of life d) and the fact that israel has killed many more than palestine in their own attacks over time and also the brutal nature of their assaults on palestinian land etc...not to mention IT'S NOT THEIR LAND IN THE FIRST PLACE -an informed white suburbanite

Israel is illegal
It is January, 2009, and this article still has relevance because the violence continues. And with all DUE respect (not "do" respect), the comments that result(ed) previously show that this conflict is going to require extraordinary leadership. And, apaprently, of a different sort than Hamas is offering its poor captive populace. Hiding out amongst civilians and stockpiling bombs and weapons in heavily-populated areas seems very unfair to the regular citizenry. If Hamas is so justified and brave, let them set aside an area of Gaza to store their weapons of war that will not put their people in the direct line of fire. Israel seems to care more about protecting its citizens than the Hamas leadership of 2009 that purposely "hides in plain sight" amongst women and children. It is all very sad.

Good article. I believe its clear that e should let Israel defend themselves. They certainly have the capability. We should also stop aiding them with money and weapons. Israel receives more foreign aid from the U. S. than any other country. Israel and the Arab countries need to work our their own peace. I guess its obvious I'm an isolationist, but why do we get so involved with the Arab-Israeli conflict so deeply when there are so many other more significant conflicts around the world. Don't misunderstand me, we should not become involved in those conflicts either.
This article gravely misunderstands the Middle East, and takes a typical American, false, view of history and current affairs. The idea of asking George W Bush to allow and even encourage more extensive Israeli attacks on Palestinians, and step up the occupation of the territories is ridiculous.
Israel is doing far from 'rolling over' to terrorists; it is perpetrating attacks almost daily on civilian targets in Gaza, it is re-enforcing its apartheid barrier in the West Bank, it is increasing illegal settlement activity, and it is bullying an entire nation into universal destitution and poverty.

Palestinians have a right to protect themselves, D. G?
I worked for the Mossad and IDF, so I know a bit when I say that ISRAEL ONLY ATTACKS PALESTINIANS WHEN PALESTINIANS ATTACK. Israelis are willing to live amongst and be kind to Palestinians until the Palestinians do something to hurt ANY Israeli.
Israel loves its citizens...and wants to protect THEM. They aren't about being right. They are about PROTECTING THEIR PEOPLE. More than I can say about every other country in the Middle East....
