Every day is flush with history. Here is a recap of events from the first half of September.

1st. 1666 - Eighty percent of London is destroyed in the Great Fire of London that began on Pudding Lane. Documented well in Pepys diary

1939 - WWII begins

2nd: 1789 - The United States Congress establishes the Treasury Department

1901 - Theodore Roosevelt, then Vice President, advises, "Speak softly and carry a big stick"

3rd: 1944 - The last time Jews are transported from Westerbork to Auschwitz

1970 - At the age of 57, Vince Lombardi dies of cancer

4th: 1530 - "Ivan the Terrible," Russian Czar, is born

1957 -Orval Faubus, governor of Arkansas, calls in the National Guard to prevent nine African American students from entering a high school in Little Rock

5th: 1877 - By a bayonet of a United States soldier, Crazy Horse, chief of the Sioux, is killed. He was allegedly killed for resisting being placed in a jail cell

1944 - Today is the day that was called "Mad Tuesday." Dutch Nazi collaborators, numbering upwards of 65,000, flee to Germany

6th: 1924 - The attempted assassination on Mussolini fails

1957 - "On the Road," by Jack Kerouac is first published

7th: 1525 - The trial against John Pistorius, church reformer labeled as heretic, is ended

1813 - "Uncle Sam" is used for the first time to reference the United States, in the New York Troy Post

8th: 1900 - Roughly 6,000 people die in a hurricane that hits Galveston, Texas

1952 - "Old Man and the Sea," by Ernest Hemingway, is published

9th: 1850 - Territories of both New Mexico and Utah are created

1893 - For the first time, a president's child is born in the White House. Ester, a daughter, is born there to President Grover Cleveland and his wife Frances.

10th: 1918 - World Series players, from both teams involved, threaten a strike unless the winners are guaranteed payment of $2500 each and losers each $1000

1942 - Gasoline is rationed due to the war as a mandate set forth by President Franklin D. Roosevelt
