Large plastic pony beads are the basis of many kid's crafts. This one used the transparent kind to create a sparkling sun catcher decoration for a window. Easy to complete and requiring little adult supervision, it is a great home decor craft that a kid can create herself.

Materials Needed for the Beaded Sun Catcher Kid's Craft

To complete the beaded sun catcher kid's craft, you need two wooden skewers, craft paint, transparent fishing line or monofilament beading thread, transparent plastic pony beads, and scissors. You will also need graph paper to make a pattern, or a printed out beading pattern from the internet or a book.

Creating the Beaded Sun Catcher Kid's Craft

The first step in creating this decorative kid's craft is to measure out the appropriate number of lengths of thread. This will depend on how many rows the pattern you are using has. You will need one thread for each row of the pattern. Cut the thread to be two times the length of the pattern as you will use a double length to secure the beads.

Next, paint the wooden skewers if you wish. These can be kept natural wood as well. Begining at one side of the pattern, tie a piece of thread over the skewer in the middle. Thread both pieces of the thread through the required beads and tie it in a knot around the second wooden skewer. Continue doing this until you reach the other side of the pattern.

If desired, you can make a beaded fringe on the leftover nylon thread below the bottom skewer. Otherwise, simply knot the thread securely and weave the ends back into the beaded lines.

While working with the wooden skewers can create a small beaded sun catcher project, it is possible to make a larger one using wooden dowels. If you are trying to make privacy for your kid's room, you could even make an entire sun catcher shade for their bedroom window.

Great idea. I wonder if you soaked the beads in some sort of essential oil if it would make the room smell. I may have to try this.

I have one of these hanging in my window. Although my son didn't make it for me, he did get it for me as a Christmas gift at a school fair.
