How to Teach a Child to Understand Gay Issues

Setting aside all of your personal beliefs and feelings, there are a few things that you must understand and homosexuality is one of them. Homosexuals are a part of our society and a part of our daily lives. They are not like a disease that you child can catch, they are just like any other person but with different sexual preferences.

1. Personal beliefs and feelings

Determine what matters the most to you. If you have a personal belief, express it so that it does not come off too strong. If you are a part of a belief that does not condole homosexuality, try not to make it sound like you are disgusted by their beliefs or that you would abandon the child if they ever decided to be with someone of the same sex. What you believe is completely different from what others might believe. Choose your words wisely and be prepared to answer questions. If you happen to be a gay parent, try not to make comments about the way people might treat you. The parent should be open but should not make comments about the way you personally feel about homosexuality or about people who are against it.

2. Discuss what homosexuality is

Let your child know what homosexuality is by giving examples. A child might even know the word homosexuality and it might be easier for you to use the term gay. Let the child know that it is not polite for them to call homosexuals by words or nicknames. Homosexuals are just like anyone else and they deserve the proper respect. Explain to your child that homosexuality is a part of our lives and that they are not a race and should not be put into a separate class from the rest of us. If you are afraid of your child becoming gay, would you not love them if they were?
