As a new parent, the three following issues are the ones about which I found myself most often in search of advice.

Trust Your Gut

I know, you have heard this a hundred times already; and still, you question yourself. The truth is, you probably will not hear a gong go off in your head, a bell sound, or a red light flash when your instincts kick in, but if you find yourself hesitating--about anything--stop and ask yourself why.

Too often, new parents are bombarded with advice, other people's stories, and instructions from doctors that can be overwhelming. With so much new information about caring for a newborn and with so little capacity for absorbing it all--you are, after all, most likely sleep deprived, excited, nervous and in shock, awe and wonder of everything--it is easy for new parents to second guess everything they think and feel.

Doctors sometimes seem to herd parents and children through the motions, and uninvited advise-givers often seem pushy and judgmental about how they think things should be done. Here are a few things I have learned that might help you through this process:

If something doesn't seem right, call the doctor. That is why they are there, so don't feel bad if you have to ask twenty questions. If your doctor makes you feel unimportant or acts condescending, find another doctor. Period.

If you are uneasy about vaccinations, do some research and educate yourself. Vaccines are not, contrary to popular belief, mandatory nor are they always the healthiest route to take. If either of the baby's parents had reactions to vaccines, it might be a good idea to postpone or consider declining that shot. Also, if anyone in the home has a compromised immune system or other health issues, it could be risky to bring a freshly vaccinated child into the home. The bottom line is, if your gut isn't totally with it, you need to pay attention.
