The 2007 Primetime Emmy Awards hosted by Ryan Seacrest tried to attract a younger, hipper crowd this year; however, red carpet fashion demonstrated a return to old school Hollywood glamour. This was a year for stars to show some refinement and restrained elegance in their hair, makeup and outfits. Let's take a look at some major fashion trends at this year's Emmys, and highlight some of this year's fashion winners.

Emmy Fashion Trends

Emmy 2007 was the year of the bare neckline. Stars wore strapless gowns, with larger dangling earrings and important accessories; the bare necklines added drama to the simple, elegant outfits worn by many actresses that night. There was sparkle and glitter aplenty at the Emmys, often adding a bright touch to more neutral outfits: Ugly Betty's Ana Ortiz wore a glittery, strapless gown by Escada, and Desperate Housewives' Eva Longoria dazzled in a pale, sequined cocktail dress.

Black and white was an important theme: either all black (as seen on Patricia Arquette) or all white (worn by Katherine Heigl) or in combination, like the dress worn by the always chic Debra Messing.

Red reflected that return to old school Hollywood elegance, and was seen on stars like Heroes' Ali Larter (in Reem Acra) and Kate Walsh, who shined in a crimson Pamela Dennis gown.

A rainbow of vibrant hues could be seen on the Emmy red carpet. Yellow was a popular color: Joely Fisher wore a buttery yellow dress which she described as a "yellow parfait," and Minnie Driver stood out in a bright yellow gown. Hot fashion colors for fall, like blues and purples, were well represented at this year's awards. Julia Louis Dreyfus was on trend in a deep purple gown by Narciso Rodriguez, and stars like Helen Mirren and Portia De Rossi donned various shades of blue. America's Sweetheart (and Emmy winner for Ugly Betty) America Ferrera, accepted her award in a simple, elegant, cobalt blue sheath.

I'm all for old Hollywood glamour. A lot of times I've been underwhelmed at awards show fashion as everyone looks the same. But as you've pointed out, there was a wide array of colors this time around and a little bit more individuality.
