Sun poisoning is a term usually used to describe a hypersensitive reaction to the sun. Medically there is no difference between sunburn and sun poisoning; both are called photodermatitis. Read further to discover sun poisoning symptoms and treatment to identify and relieve your pain.

Sun poisoning symptoms are identical to those of severe sunburn. They can include significant itching, redness, and sometimes blisters which could lead to infection on areas of skin exposed to sunlight. Other systemic (non-skin) symptoms include nausea, rapid pulse, rapid breathing, fever, dizziness, fatigue, headache, chills, fluid loss, and electrolyte imbalance.

Sun poisoning symptoms are naturally caused by overexposure to the sun's rays or tanning bed rays. Some medical conditions, medications, and cosmetic ingredients can make the skin more sensitive to sun exposure. That means that even a very short exposure can lead to sun poisoning if the conditions are right.

Conditions and treatments that can make the skin more sensitive to the sun's rays and lead to sun poisoning include: being fair skinned or red haired; using certain medicines like tetracycline, thiazide diuretics, sulfa drugs and oral contraceptives, St. John's wort and other anti-depressants; medical conditions including albinism, lupus, porphyria, vitiligo, and xeroderma pigmentosum; topical applications of cosmetics, lotions, fragrances or soaps containing musk ambrette, methylcoumarin, lemon oil, PABA, psoralens, coal tars or salicylic annelids. If you have had a reaction to the sun in the past, read the labels!

Takeaways
  • Sun Poisoning is not a medical diagnosis or term
  • Heat stroke is different than sun poisoning, it requires medical aid
  • Some medications increase sensitivity to the sun's rays

I got sun poisoning over the weekend. I have blistery bumps in between my cleavage, haha. My bumps aren't red though. they are a yellowish color, and they are all bubbled up. Last night, one of them popped, and liquid oozed out. Does anyone know how long this clears up? I use some solarcaine on it. Should I be using something else? Or using something with it?

I went to a theme park on Saturday and by Saturday night, I had chills, a fever, and couldn't decide whether or not I was hot or cold. Today is Monday, and I am still very red, sore, and itchy on my face, shoulders, and back. (I've never had a sunburn on my ears before now! lol) I have been using aloe cooling gel which seems to help for about 30 mins or so, but even with it I am terribly uncomfortable. I am going to try the vinegar... even though I'm afraid of the sting! :)

Yes - I have had sun-poisoning several times. I even use a sunscreen (SPF -30) . I get the very small red bumps. I have gone to the doctor when my arms and lips get swollen. When it is not that bad, I take Advil, drink lots of water or gatorade while in the sun. I put cold cloths on arms and legs and keep putting OTC cortizone cream or lotion - I have tried several kinds of lotion - just to keep the skin hydrated.I sure envy those who can take the sun and get that nice tan.

I got burned bad on the back of my shoulders and lower back while washing my car. I forgot to put on sunscreen and am highly allergic to the sun. I had some really bad burns in FL when I was really little. It has been 8 days now - it has cooled down, peeled and all that, but it is still itching and hurting SO BAD I CAN'T STAND IT! I have been taking benadryl, motrin, putting on aloe w/ lidocaine, lotion, using baby wash so soap won't irritate it. Every time I go in air conditioning or get near a fan it is 20 times worse. What else can I do? The pain and itching are totally distracting! I think the aloe is not helping any more-it does say to not use on large areas or for more than 7 days. It just looks like a major burn now. HELP!

why is it guys advice always seems to be suck it up ive had worse. obviously not if it went away that quick. 7 days later. just as much pain. just as much swelling. just as much redness, itchyness, everything. try burning your ass as well? most guys dont know the pain when you cant even sit. girls are expecting to wear bikinis and show off theirbodies, guys wear long shorts, still, no where near the pain and discomfort. lotion with aloe, every hour or so. its not as sticky as pure aloe, if you can do sticky, gowith the aloe though. if its severe, calamine lotion every hour, aloe based sun burn cream every hour, at opposite half hours. just as good for it as extra strength burn cream you'll get at the dr. if rubbing against clothes, wrap in gauze rolls when using burn cream. it wont rub off or hurt. feels heavenly.

Once each summer, usually with my first long term sun exposure, I develop a pinpoint rash on those portions of my skin exposed to the sun. Most times, this is in absence of any sun burn. My physician's have always diagnosed this as sun poisoning since childhood--I am now in the fifth decade of life. On the topic of what to do for sunburn, I, too, have found that white vinegar works wonders to reduce the heat of the burn and the pain associated with it. I used it on my kids and even though they didn't care for "smelling like a pickle," they did like being able to wake up the next morning free from pain.

Great article. The aloe gel from Ocean Potion helped considerably when I had severe sunburn.

when i get a mild sunburn i use plain white vinegar . it will sting for a few seconds but its worth it.. the pain goes away no blisters and no peeling.. if i get sun poisoning i end up having to get a steroid dose pak
