Angelina has one. Madonna has one, and now Mary-Louise Parker has one. What is this new accessory that's taken Hollywood by storm, an African child of course. Celebrities appear to be adopting left and right these days which is a great thing, but why Africa? There's plenty of children right here in America that need homes, love and parents just like any other child, so why not adopt one of them?

It seems to me that these celebrities are adopting from Africa so they can say, "Look how wonderful I am. I went all the way to Africa with all its issues and diseases and I'm bringing one of these little black babies home with me. Aren't I a good person?" Yes you are a good person and you would have been a good person no matter where your adopted child was from, so why not start charity at home? Are the hundreds of thousands of kids in foster care in America just not trendy enough? Are they so much better off then kids in foster care in other countries? Maybe so, but that doesn't make them any less worthy or any less in need of a good home as children that live in other countries.

Something else that drives me nuts is the fact that these celebrities adopt and then they parade the child around like a new Prada bag. You are not the first people on planet earth to adopt. People who don't have celebrity money and celebrity resources adopt everyday and never get the attention or recognition that the Angelia Jolie's get. And there are other celebrities that have adopted in the past that don't make a enormous deal out of it, like Tom Cruise for instance or Michelle Pfeiffer, both have adopted children, but you don't see them pimping their adopted children out for press, you don't see them making a big deal out of the fact that they were more then willing to give some deserving child a good home.

I don't want to sound like I'm against adoption. I'm 100% for adoption. I'm for adoption no matter where the child is from or what the child looks like, but it ticks me off that these celebrities come off as if the children right here in America, black or white just aren't good enough or maybe to good for them to adopt.

Adopting from Africa appears to be the new Hollywood trend.

How dare you be against adoption!!! Just teasing :) I've always wondered why celebrities and regular people alike seem to go to other countries instead of helping our own. Some things I've heard is that the American adoption process is hard and drawn out b/c you have to get on a list, get approved, have a visit to make sure you can handle it, etc. But in foreign countries it must be easier to adopt. Even so, if I were planning to adopt in 5 years I would put my name on a list NOW and try to help an American. Celebrities go from no children to "I want one right this second". I don't get it.

I agree that sometimes it seems like their motivation is less than sincere. I think to myself though, anything that raises awareness to these problems must be good, right? Or at least helpful in some small way. -Keta

I'm with you and at first that's what i thought then i started thinking of all the other children adopted by celebrities that you never hear or see. I think it's becoming a trend of some twisted sort and like i said i'm for adoption but i hope it's for the right reasons and they think about all the children right under their noses that could benefit from them too.

I don't know if they are parading them around, or because they are celebs it just seems that way. I would prefer to think the latter because the first would make me angry to think they were just using a child for publicity.
