October is Animal Safety and Protection Month

What do feral and domesticated animals have in common this month? What do four legged (although sometimes tripod as well) family members and wild life animals have in common this month? October is National Animal Safety and Protection Month.

All animals are vital to our society. Therefore, it is important that we promote their safety. Even though it is only one month, safety and protection can happen year round!

Ways to promote animal safety and protection month- children's activities

Take you child to the zoo. Start educating them on animal care. Research into adopting a pet at your local zoo for the month. Take your child to a shelter or rescue and volunteer to walk dogs or play in the cat room with kittens. Are there local stables where you live? Ask about taking your child on a tour and see what goes into caring for horses. Log onto www.crayola.com and view their calendar. They have some wonderful animal printable pages for children to color and from which to learn.

Ways to promote animal safety and protection month- advocacy

Write letters to the editor of your local newspaper. Contact local radio and television personalities to bring animals to the forefront this month. Contact your local politicians and see what is being done to make sure animal care services are safe and humane. Join a local Yahoo group or other Internet group and see what grass roots and hard work can accomplish in your town. With enough action from the people, pet mills can be stopped.

Perhaps a bit off topic, but one thing I've learned not to do is to put my deaf cat in his outdoor patio pen on Halloween. Just a prudent move I think. I enjoy Halloween, but he stays inside with me;)
