Every true Washingtonian should be able to tell visitors to our nation's capitol how to get to certain must-see sites around the area. The Air and Space Museum, the White House, American University, the Mall, and of course, the nearest Armand's Pizza. Wait...pizza? There's no doubt about it, for over 25 years Armand's has been providing the best pizza to DC and the Maryland and Northern Virginia suburbs. If you're looking for the best deep dish pizza you can find after spending a day exploring our nation's capitol, all signs should point to Armand's Pizza.

Armand's Pizza was founded by Lew Newmeyer in 1969, and they added the deep dish pizza to their menu in 1975. Using a recipe that he created and perfected with his sons, that same recipe can still be tasted at local Armand's restaurants today. Today Newmeyer's idea to share Chicago style deep dish pizza with the metro area has resulted in a chain of 11 local restaurants, each carrying the same delicious pizza, as well as franchise opportunities. Not only that, but they've expanded and many sites also do catering, delivery, and carry out as well. My favorite way to enjoy Armand's pizza is to go in, order it half-baked, take it home, finish heating it in the oven, and eat it fresh in front of a Redskins football game. Other DC area regulars have been known to do the same.

So just What makes an Armand's Pizza so great? To begin with, Armand's specializes in Chicago-style deep dish pizza, hard to come by in the metro area. Their specialty pizzas include toppings you might not find at every local pizza joint, from spinach and broccoli to Thai chicken. In addition Armand's serves delicious Atlantic City style subs, appetizers, and pasta dishes as well. However, regulars to Armand's, as my family has been for years, stick with pizza every time.

Prices at Armand's Pizza are reasonable, especially considering their location in the nation's capitol. At $16.75, a deep dish large is more than enough to feed a family of four. With hearty slices and toppings piled high, Armand's is a great value for the money.

Takeaways
  • Armand's specializes in Chicago-style deep dish pizza.
  • Stop in after a day of sightseeing or a Redskins game.
  • There are 11 restaurants in the MD/VA/DC area.

Home pizzerias are far superior to franchises! When I was growing up there was a local pizzeria and they were awesome! There was a death in the family so eventually they closed down--boy I miss that place. Around here all we've got is Pizza Hut or the local convenience store. Pizza Hut is a 30 mile jaunt so we opt out of pizza entirely. Thinking about this, now I'm hungry, thanks!
