Slaves of the System

Slaves of the System
We hungrily await our check
Our lights will be shut off tomorrow
The water is next
There's no oil to keep us warm
The last can of Spam
Has been eaten
Aah! The day is here
The one day
Our pockets are fat
By night they'll be empty
But for now
We feel like kings
They give
Just enough
To keep us alive
Just enough
To keep our lights on
Not enough
To really live
Not enough
To save a few pennies
For a rainy day
Not enough
To help us find work
Not enough
To look presentable
To find a job
A job that will pay
More than this damn check
Only enough
To keep us
Slaves of the System

Excellent poem. I always say we are no different than slaves building pyramids. Only today we are called employers and employees. To Ria's comment: gee having a roof over ones head is an important material object, just as is some type of heating to keep one warm. Clothing and so on down the line. At least one of our weekly workdays is just to pay taxes. Those lucky to own a home, then pay more taxes. Pets? More fees. Vehicle to get to job? Best obey the law, or the fines will be a plenty and even if you have insurance and some one rearends you, there is no guarantees your totalled car will be replaced. Let me not even begin with the cost of taking children to doctors.

Anyone who places importance on material objects is a slave.
