When I first heard someone mention this place to us on the island, I thought they were joking. So I laughed and said yeah right. Then the person gave us directions and said no there really is a museum for the potato. I was thinking at that point now I am intrigued because he also said that it is the only museum like it in the world. I felt as if we had to go and find this museum now or I would always wonder what it was like. It must be doing well because it has been around since 1993. So I talked my husband into going with me and finding this place.
O'Leary is located on the western part of the island. It is surrounded by potato fields. The potatoes in that area have been a very important part of their economy for years. So they felt like they needed to show their appreciation by making a museum for the potato which I thought was a great tourist idea! Who would pass up going to a potato museum?
As we pulled up I could see a giant sculpture of a potato in front of the museum. I laughed immediately. At this point I realized that this was really a museum for the potato. The sculpture is made out of fiberglass. It stands 14 feet high and measures 7 feet in diameter. As you pull into the parking lot the sculpture really stands out and it just screams to people passing by come check this place out or take a picture of me!
This place in the inside was very odd but interesting at the same time. It was larger than I thought it would be. The building had 7000 square feet to walk through. We had to pay a little over $6 each to get in, but I really wanted to see what it was all about. And if you think about it that really isn't that expensive at all.
