Zatarain's makes a multitude of products that you can make meals from by adding your favorite meat. I am reviewing their Family Size New Orleans Style Jambalaya Mix, which has 50% more product than their regular package. You will find this in the store where the rice and other pre-packaged/seasoned rice mixtures are located. Please see my picture for easy identification when looking for it on the shelves.

I will start by commenting on the size. I used to purchase their regular size box to feed my family of four. Now that my two children are older, they eat more and the upgrade to the family size is just the right amount for all of us. The box states that it serves 8 but in today's America, that would be more like 8 small children. The weight of this product is 12 oz.

Nutritional information for this Family Size New Orleans Style Jambalaya Mix is as follows:

Serving size 1 cup prepared or ¼ cup dry (42.5g)
Servings per container 6
Calories 150
Total Fat 0g
Cholesterol 0mg
Sodium 670mg
Total Carbohydrates 32g
Dietary Fiber 1g
Sugars 0g
Protein 3g
Vitamin A 15%
Vitamin C 10%
Calcium 4%
Iron 8%
Folic Acid 15%

This can be prepared alone but it is recommended to add 1 ½ pounds of smoked sausage, pre-cooked chicken, ham or shrimp cut into bite size pieces. I use sausage. You combine 3 ¾ cups water, package contents and meat. This calls for 2 tbsp optional vegetable oil but I leave this out because the sausage already has enough grease in it. Bring to a boil then reduce heat, stir and cover simmering on low heat for 25 minutes.

Zatarain's Jambalaya Mix is extremely easy to make. You can come home from work, throw it together and change into your pajamas while it simmers for 25 minutes.

Everyone in my household enjoys this product but we won't eat it frequently as it is very high in sodium. Fortunately, we don't have to watch our sodium intake however the taste is relatively salty. You might retain some water after eating this!

This one is a personal favorite of ours (we prefer the "cheesy" variety). We don't have it often, but we love it!

I have been tempted to buy this, but until recently my kids wouldn't eat rice. Now all the sudden 2 of my kids love it. Thank you for the information, I think I will be giving this a try.

This is a great review. It's a pity about the high sodium content though. Sophie
