If you are a Civil War buff, you will want to be in Dalton, Georgia this weekend!

The largest Civil War artifacts auction ever held in Georgia will take place this Saturday, September 22, at the Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center located in Dalton, Georgia.

A wide assortment of artifacts will be up for auction on Saturday, with a free public viewing to be held on Friday from 10am to 7pm.

A portrait that may be the earliest known one of George Armstrong Custer in his West Point uniform is one of the many sought after artifacts that will go to the highest bidder on Saturday.

A U.S. Army oak medicine chest with original label and bottles that was supplied by Edward R. Squibb, a Navy doctor, who later founded the Squibb Company, will also be up for auction.

Long guns, pistols, swords, uniforms, hats, signed documents and letters. Indian artifacts, including arrow heads, stone tools, pots and beaded items, will be among the 710 lots that are auctioned off on Saturday.

The auction will start at 10am Saturday morning. Live bids will be taken from the floor of the Trade Center, bids will also be taken via internet on eBay, bids can be phoned in and bids can be made by fax. However, this will be an event that you will want to attend in person, even if you just come to view the artifacts on Friday.

The Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center is located in Dalton, Ga., known as the Carpet Capitol Of the World. Dalton is located about midway between Atlanta and Chattanooga, the Trade Center is located just off I-75, exit 333.

Civil War buffs will also enjoy other nearby historical places of interest- the Trade Center is located on Dug Gap Battle Road, a historical battle ground itself. The Chief Vann House is located about 25 miles to the east in Chatsworth, GA. Chickamauga Battle Field is about 25 miles north of the Trade Center, in Chickamauga, GA. New Echota Historic Site located about 25 miles to the south in Calhoun, GA.

This is an area that folks who enjoy Civil War and Indian history do not have to travel far to find places to explore and learn more about their passion.
