The Western Maryland Rail Trail is conveniently located about 2 hours away from Baltimore and Washington, DC off of interstate 70. Contrary, to the big cities, the trail offers a quiet, rural experience. Scenic views await visitors, as the trail winds through rolling hills, farmlands, old orchards, and the rural town of Hancock. I personally have encountered white tail deer, squirrels, ground hogs, box turtles, hawks, and great horned owls while riding on the trail. Access to the trail is free and easy. There is a parking lot at the beginning of the trail near Big Pool and Fort Frederick State Park. There is another parking area in Hancock which is about the halfway mark of the trail. Both parking areas offer ideal areas to picnic and meet up with friends.

"The Western Maryland Rail Trail is currently about 23 miles long. Beginning about ½ mile west of historic Fort Frederick State Park in Washington County, the trail follows the former Western Maryland Railway line through Hancock, Maryland, and on to Woodmont Natural Resources Management Area and the Sideling Hill Wildlife Management Area. "Being paved the trail is accessible by many types of bicycles, rollerblades, skates, hikers, joggers, and wheelchairs. The level trail and low grades make the trail suited to novice cyclists. It parallels parts of the C&O Canal so there are even more options for the outdoor enthusiast. It also parallels the Potomac River offering gorgeous river views.

Sounds like a very nice place to visit. The Katy Trail has been paved over in Texas, too.
