Jenny McCarthy Tells Oprah that Autism Can Be Reversed

When you think of Jenny McCarthy, you probably visualize a buxom blonde holding hands with funny man Jim Carrey. She's the former Playboy Playmate of the Year who jumped into the hearts of men with her good looks and later caught the attention of women with her funny personality.

However, recently, she appeared on Oprah showing a more serious side; she spoke about her fight against autism.

Autism is a developmental disorder in children often characterized by impaired communication, excessive rigidity and emotional detachment. Through her book "Louder Than Words: A Mother's Journey in Healing Autism," McCarthy reveals her struggles to reverse the effects of it on her son, Evan John Asher. She gives a hindsight and current view of how she deals with her son's autism.

Like many mothers, McCarthy interpreted all of Evan's behavior in the most positive light. The flapping of his hands. How he played (or didn't play) differently than other kids. His pre-occupation with spinning objects. These were all things she thought were just unique to his personality. However, one day, the light clicked on.

It occurred approximately one month after she read an article about autism and thanked God that Evan didn't have it. She began looking at his behavior and realizing that something was wrong, Worried, she searched online to find clues.

By googling his symptoms, McCarthy figured out her son was suffering from autism. Then, the real fight began. She had to learn how to give Evan the best quality of life despite his disorder.

Again, through Google and a friendly relationship with another mother dealing with a child suffering from the same disorder (actress Holly Robinson Peete), Jenny McCarthy found ways to reduce the effects of autism in her son Evan. Below are some of the things she spoke about on Oprah.

* A Gluten-Free Diet. A couple of weeks after she changed her son's diet, he began to utter words and pay better attention.

* Video-Tape Modeling. Evan didn't know how to play. So, through video taping things like her catching a ball with another person, he was able to learn how to do the same activity.

Evan doesn't have autism. Jenny assumes he does from self diagnosing from reading stuff on the Web. But she never had him tested. Smart move. And there is no proof that vaccines can cause it. it's bogus. Go ahead and don't vaccinate your kids. Then you'll see all these diseases that did damage to kids a long time ago come back and do it all over. Protecting your kids from things like polio, rubella, and whooping cough should take priority over listening to some "celebrity" with no medical training.

I think part of the problem here is the pressure our society puts on mothers to be perfect: Good mothers have perfect, healthy children. (Evan was born "normal.") Good mothers keep their children happy and safe. (Jenny is a "mother warrior.") Good mothers never get divorced. (Evan's Autism "caused" Jenny's divorce). Good mothers never, ever have negative feelings towards their children. (Jenny blames the medical establishment .. for the child who has caused her to be a bad mother). This is clearly a woman who has cracked.

I have two children on the autistic spectrum and I work with autistic children. My youngest was dx. at 2 years old severe. My older son has Asbergers. I believe there is a genetic disposition along with other factors.Possible enviromental but I dont think the immunizations are the cause. As far as the GFCF diet I tried that. I think its preety difficult to know how successful it is because most people are not willing to stop other therapy at the same time and that is the only way to run a TRUE study. My youngest is preety much symptom free but I think that most of the success was due to sensory intergration therapy and play based therapy "The Play Project by: Dr. Rick Solomon. He HAS A PUBLISHED STUDY on the success of the program. Best of luck to all. As a parent you Do have to be COMMITED To alot of HARD work.

My son was diagnosed with mild autism at 4 yrs. old. A lot of the signs were there but him being our first child we didn't know them. He was a perfectly normal baby and toddler until after his shots at 15mos old. After that he stopped talking. He was talking and doing everything right on time before the shots. But back then we had just had our second child and that is when he seemed to stop talking but we thought it was because of us bringing home a new baby so soon. He got his shots in 2000 before they removed all the ones that contained mercury. So yes I firmly believe that they cause my sons life to change in a negative way. I know now that him and another children like him will have to suffer for the rest of their lives all because we all as parents trusted the shots that they had to keep them healthly and never thought those would be the ones to hurt them.

I don't think anyone is saying it is easy - just that it is doable. And if you can't afford to do everything that is being recommended do what you can. The diet changes needn't cost anything. And who knows what changes that might bring to start with?

I am thinking this might be a generational thing. Probably due to something WE, the mothers, were exposed to as children that may be the cause. I am thinking in another few generations, the number of autism cases will diminish.

Does Jenny really believe Thimersol caused her son's autism? They took that out of the vaccines in 2001, so would here son have even got it?

My neighbor is helping the fight with research. She is absolutely convinced that autism and encephelitis are fungal in nature. Put your kids on gluten free, casien free diets. If they are too old it may not help. If they are still young it may. Kill the fungus before it reaches their brains and causes permanent damage. Research other anti fungal options.... Put your child on a high omega -3 diet (good for the brain).
