House Bill Demands Action on Human Rights Violations in Vietnam

Human rights violations are increasing in Vietnam and we should withhold US humanitarian aid to the Vietnam government, according to the Office of U.S. Representative Chris Smith. The Congressman's bill that has successfully passed in the House states that it is time for

 our government to do something to stop the human rights abuse in that country.

According to the Office of U.S. Representative Chris Smith, the past few months have seen an increase in abuses and brutalities against Vietnamese people who were attempting to promote human rights in the country. One example is Father Ly; he was sentenced to eight years in prison for giving out "anti-government" information. The fact is that Father Ly is a leader is the Vietnam Progression Party and started the Vietnamese Labor Movement. Father Ly's home was raided and he was taken to prison earlier this year. Along with Father Ly, many human rights attorney's were also arrested.

The "Vietnam Human Rights Act of 2007" (H.R. 3096) requires proof that Vietnam's political and religious leaders are released from prison and that the Vietnam government is taking actions to improve the human rights conditions in their county. Failure to meet these requirements will result in the loss of US humanitarian aid to the Vietnam government. The bill also budgets $4 million to help promote human rights through organizations and individuals and $10 million to stop the government from blocking Radio Free Asia in Vietnam.

The Office of U.S. Representative Chris Smith states that they would never deny humanitarian aid to the people of Vietnam, just the government. It is imperative that the efforts to stop the spread of HIV-AIDS in the area.

"Massive human rights violations perpetrated by the Government of Vietnam cannot be overlooked." Smith told his colleagues. People working to spread democracy and human rights in this world should not be punished for their efforts. Everyone has the right to the basic freedoms that are being denied in Vietnam today.
