Public health policy is an area of research that has grown in popularity in recent years. One of the key aspects of public health has been the examination of the complications associated with chemical dependency, especially the complications that arise when an individual chooses to rehabilitate.

With the aid of public health initiatives, many chemical dependency programs, today, are offering comprehensive support including the most crucial of the supports needed, that involving avoiding relapse.

If you, or someone you love, is suffering through a complication associated with chemical dependency, you probably understand the varying dynamics of rehabilitation and care. Initially, the chemical dependency program will offer support in avoiding stress that leads to a return to the chemical abuse, offers pharmacology treatment to manage withdrawal symptoms and then begins to retrain the dependent individual's way of thinking, in hopes of managing daily triggers.

To prevent relapse, however, there are significant numbers of areas in which many chemical dependency programs fail. To prevent relapse, the dependent individual's entire lifestyle must change. This often translates into a significant change in family support, interaction with friends and acquaintances, changes to diet and even engaging in new activities and hobbies. Without these types of changes outside of rehabilitation, many chemically dependent individuals fall prey to relapse.

Another aspect of care that is beginning to take a more aggressive focus is that of management in psychiatric complications. Because most individuals who are chemically dependent are suffering from an underlying psychiatric complication, the management of that complication must be long term. Providing care within a rehabilitation facility is common. But, it is the resource and tools outside of the rehabilitation facility that will serve the patient best and provide for a greater opportunity to avoid relapse.
