The U.S. House Health, Employment, Labor and Pensions Subcommittee held a hearing last week for the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). The full House could vote on the bill in September, that, if enacted, will prohibit discrimination against employees based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

A majority of heterosexual adults (60%) were not aware that under current federal law, employers have the right to fire someone identified as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender (GLBT), without equal rights protection. According to a recent Harris poll, an overwhelming 79% of heterosexuals feel that a person's job performance rather than sexual orientation should be the standard for judging employment tenure.

Not everyone agrees with the American heterosexual population, which seems to defend the rights of the GLBT population. In a report by Jennifer Mesko at CitizenLink.com, the president of the Family Research Council, Tony Perkins, fears the new legislation "could put the rights of homosexuals above employers, including some churches." Many faith-based organizations are against ENDA because they will lose their truly faith-based hiring practices.

Co-workers, however, would not be offended to find out they share a cubicle with a GLBT employee. According to the Harris poll, 88% of heterosexuals say they would feel indifferent or feel positive to learn a co-worker is gay, as opposed to 12% who would feel negative. This support has likely contributed to the GLBT employee being more open about their sexual orientation at work:

* In 2007, 54% of GLBT adults are comfortable with a photo of their partner on their work desk, compared to 34% in 2002.

* In 2007, 64% of GLBT adults are comfortable introducing their partner to a co-worker, compared to 50% in 2002.

However, there isn't total social support of the GLBT community just yet. The Harris poll shows:

* 51% of GLBT employees report hearing anti-gay comments at work and 15% say co-workers harass them on the job.

I agree with M.S. What does sexual orientation have to do with job performance? As long as they're doing the job they're paid to do, what they do on their own time is their business.

I am honestly stunned that in 2007 a person can still be fired for being gay! Why should someone be judged on their sexual orientation instead of the quality of their work.

Good article Aly. My opinion on this whole thing is, what does someone's sex life have to do with their work ability?

"Embarrassing as a US citizen." - Exactly. And to Mary E. Coe: the day Gays are allowed to get married with no restrictions is the day I will give your argument any credence.

Hard to believe this is still a real issue in America today. Embarrassing as a US citizen.

Race, religion, gender, and sexual orientation have nothing to do with the ability to perform a job. I don't understand why, in this century, we continue to treat people as if they are sub-human. I hope the bill passes and I hope it is enforced.

A person's sexual preferences and/or orientation have nothing to do with their work - though their behavior might and THAT is what the real issue should always be. The behavior, not the belief. Nice piece! David

A job performance rating should be simply that. Period.

This should have been done before now. Sexual orientation has no impact on your job. If people make that the focus instead of doing their job, sure, get rid of them....but get rid of the heterosexuals in the office doing the same thing. Business is business. Provacative article.

we must defend everyones rights...regardless of sexual preference, or race, or religion... thanks for this most important information..

Gays should not be fired because of their sexual orientation. As far as equal benefits for their partners. I don't think anything is equql about that. Heterosexuals has to be married in order to get benefits for their spouse. They can't get benefits for a partner they are living with outside of marriage. If Jays get equal benefits for the partner they are just living with; heterosexuals will have to get that same equal benefit rights for their live-in girlfriend or boyfriend; in order to make it equal.
