When my wife and I bought our first home a little over a year ago, we found ourselves having problems sleeping at night. The previous owners were heavy smokers and that lingered throughout the house. Since we moved in during the winter months, we weren't able to have our windows open and the lack of fresh air would cause us to get sore throats and stuffy noses during the night.

Needing some relief, we decided to invest some money in the Holmes HEPA Air Purifier. We figured the purifier, which cost about $40, would fit on our dresser and hopefully clean some of the smoke out of the room. What we found, is it worked better than we expected.

The first night we had the Holmes Air Purifier, we turned it on about an hour before we went to bed. And, by the time we were in bed, we were already noticing a huge difference in the room. It took us a little while to get used to the noise coming from the purifier but, once we did, we both had the best night's sleep we've had in a while.

The Holmes Air Purifier draws in air from the room and runs it through the filter, cleaning out any dust, mold, etc. We ran the purifier all winter and it kept our room smelling fresh until it warmed up enough for us to open our windows and air the room out completely.

While I'm generally happy with the Holmes Air Purifier, I will admit there are some things I would change about it.

I already mentioned the noise factor. The Holmes purifier runs much louder than I expected it to. We were able to get used to it after a while but I know there are some people that probably won't be able to.

The second problem I noticed might just be because of the cigarette smoke that was in our room but we found ourselves having to change the filter much more often than the book said we would need to. This wouldn't be a huge deal but HEPA filters aren't cheap.

One other thing I noticed about our room when we were running the Holmes Air Purifier was, even though the air was definitely much cleaner, it seemed to be drier too. Whenever we run it for a significant length of time, I will almost always wake up in the middle of the night with a nose bleed. I actually had to start running a humidifier at the same time to correct this problem.
