Controversial comedienne Kathy Griffin caused quite a stir during the un-aired, Creative Arts portion of the Emmy Awards this Sunday, when, during her acceptance speech for her Bravo reality show, My Life on the D-List, Kathy Griffin said, "Suck it, Jesus."

In its entirety, Kathy Griffin's comment was, "a lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus. So, all I can say is, 'suck it, Jesus.' This award is my god now!"

Before I go on, let's not even try to say that we really believe Kathy is at home worshiping an Emmy, where a portrait of the crucifix previously stood. Plenty of people will be discussing whether they believe Kathy's comment should have been censored or not, if free speech is in jeopardy, the same conversation we have every year someone does or says something fleeting and terrible. Well we all know what she said verbatim, along with Sally Field and all the others because it was everywhere, immediately and unencumbered, several days hence, wasn't it? The way it always is, the way we all knew it would be. So rest easy young country. Fox was trying to spare certain ears from abuse, not tinsel town from their freedoms. The gesture was more along the lines of propriety than censorship, a dying art in my opinion.

Takeaways
  • When offense arises, self-soothe by examining motives and trying to understand other points of view.
  • Protecting viewers from potentially hurtful speech is a freedom that can also be exercised.
  • Oprah thanking Jesus during a speech: moving. Three 6 Mafia: lame.

concidering the fact that Kathy Griffin is an Atheist, I am sure she gets tired of people thanking Jesus for THEIR OWN accomplishments. She was also making a point of the fact that SHE worked hard for that achievement, and no one, or nothing else should have all the credit for HER hard work. hhhhmmm, taking responsibility for your own actions, good or bad, instead of using a crutch. Now there's a concept!

why are people being rewarded for saying things such as this and similiar items pertaining to it? Is this what we want out children to think? It's okay little Susie to say that Jesus can suck it, because America will think it's funny and reward you with it. WHat kind of society would reward someone for insulting a major religious figure? Even if you're not Christian, you saw what happened when that french guy drew a representation of the prophet Muhammad?

I believe what Kathy Griffin said was crass and beneath her, but I don't see any lynching offense here. You'll notice, I hope, that Christians aren't marching about carrying signs calling for Griffin's death like certain religions do. I use the term "certain religions" because, though I do not claim the mantle of "Christian," I do think that Christianity is not a religion, but a Person. Jesus Christ of Nazareth (Yeshua Hammaschiach in Hebrew, I think.)

I don't like it, but overreacting to the comments of an individual that makes a living in controversy would seem to be spreading the very words that are objectionable. Remember the Muhammad with a bomb in his turban, that was circulated be a Danish cartoonist?
