A CASE OF THE UGLIES

Do you have a web site with a long name that runs off the edge of your business card, is hard to remember, or otherwise sucks?

There is relief, and it has a name: ShortURL.com

PROBLEM & SOLUTION - ALL AT ONCE!

I am a hapless victim to at least one problem above, but luckily ran across ShortURL by accident. I had a look at their services and was wowed at their simple yet extremely practical solution. After checking a few other providers of similar services, I came back to the ShortURL folks.

One free service they offer gives you a much shorter web address (URL) to replace your otherwise longer (yucch!) URL. For example, my Associated Content web URL is:

www.associatedcontent.com/johnmelendez

While not particularly ugly, my long URL is a little hard to remember and definitely is not conducive to business card use. After giving it some thought, I came across the following solution, which points to the same content page shown above:

CoolReads.2ya.com

FEATURES

After looking at their premium account features, I signed up. While some of these buggers are not free, I thought the offered price was a bargain! Sign me up, Boss!.

I won't list all the features (go to their website), but my three faves are:

· Traffic reporting to your website.

· Your choice of sub-domains from the likes of 2ya.com, bigbig.com, etc.

· Your new URL's free submission to about 24 major search engines.

Check it out - and breathe easy under a lighter load that a short URL offers!

That's a great idea. I'd love to use that for some of my affiliate links.

Carol, good question re the URL. Basically you can start off with whatever URL you want. Then you can use the shorter URL as an ALIAS that functions the same as the longer one. All it does is serve as a kind of place holder in the internet, and sends all traffic to the web site you specify you want traffic to go to. All it does is just forward traffic from a nice short URL and sends it to the long ugly one you are stuck with using. To answer your question specifically, the answer is no, you don't need to set up your destination URL up in any way. All you need to do is select a shorter URL name that has not already been taken by someone else. Get it?

so the upfront advice would be to make sure your site has a short url when you set it up?
