William Sherman, a general in the American Civil war, said that, "War is Hell!" It will be shown, however, that war, whether fought within or without the strict guidelines laid down for it, is always worse than hell. There are two distinct aspects of a just war and both must be adhered to in order for a war to be called just. These are jus ad bellum and jus in bello or justice for war and justice in war. Using current wars as case studies I hope to demonstrate that, even with increased freedom of press and information, the worlds super powers are still managing to conduct unjust wars and get away with it.

Jus ad bellum is a Latin word literally meaning Justice of War. The concept of jus ad bellum is used to determine whether there was just cause in going to war. In the preface to the fourth edition of his book, Just and Unjust Wars, Michael Walzer explains that the allied attack by Poland, France and Britain on Germany in 1939 was a paradigmatic, or perfect example of, a just cause for war. Germany was guilty of aggression against, not only their own people but across international borders. There have been various international laws and agreements passed attempting to ensure that all wars declared have just cause. One of the most significant of these was the United Nations Charter, originally signed by fifty nations, including all five of the original Security Council, in 1945 ensuring the perpetuation of international peace and security. It is interesting to note that in any given year since the signing of that charter at least one of the Security Council countries has been involved in an international conflict.

Alyce lives in a dream world. Wars have always had innocent casualties. Pacifism has its place in the fairytale world. In reality people will get killed in wars be they soldiers or not. The War in Iraq ended a long time ago and was made legal in 1998, thanks to Bill Clinton and in 2002 thanks to George W. Bush. It was also illegal for Muslims to bomb tons of American buildings killing innocent people, why not cry about that, or do you dare? Iraq switching to the Euro is nothing more than a conspiracy theory which holds no weight.

More killing is done to the people of Iraq by their own. Islamic terrorists should stay out of populated civilian areas. There are no names on bombs. If you want to complain, do so to the Islamic terrorists who keep killing and torturing their own people because they want a better nation, part in thanks to American intervention. What is happening in Iraq and Afghanistan are only proxies in the War on Terror. The Iraqi government is doing well, thanks to America. Afghanistan will also do well. America does more good in the world than bad. People in the world in general are alright thanks to America. U.S actually does something instead of talk, talk, talk like the useless U.N.

True Taylor, we need to stay but we need to stop bombing innocent people. The BBC reported that september saw a vast improvement on previous months, only 850 died. More than twice that number died in August. I hope these figures fill you with horror and not hope!

The funny thing is that when the US and other countries use the excuse or have the plan of taking out regimes and implant new ones, the new regimes are almost always worse than the ones before or just as bad or still really bad but not as worse. I don't know my history wonderfully well, but that seems to be the case. Iraq definitely has turned out to be wrong since it seems that the intentions of the US were lied about the whole time. I do think, though, that we do have the obligation to stay there until things are sorted out more. We can't leave now; it's too late for that unfortunately.

It would be nice if men would fight wars in a civilized manner and stop disrupting innocent citizen's lives, which simply creates hatred and more things to fight about somewhere down the road. I am a pacifist so don't know much about war in general and enjoyed your explanation. I did think the war in Iraq was illegal war of aggression because the US violated a UN Charter we signed. I believe that it had to do with Iraq switching to the Euro which was going to seriously affect the US in World Trade.
