Woody Allen is an American film director. He is also an actor and an author. He was born on December 1, 1935. His comedies seemed to become progressively darker.

When Allen acts, he is usually a neurotic New Yorker. It is common for him to lose "the girl." Then he is able to understand and articulate to say why it happened.

When Allen directs, he tends to combine what is known as "psychobabble" with the old slapstick gags.

Allen was born as Allen Stewart Konigsberg. In his late teens, he started to write comedy for a variety of television stars. He wanted to perform, so he became a stand-up comedian. It did not take him long to learn the difference between writing a funny line and delivering one.

Allen's first film was writing and appearing in 1965's What's New, Pussycat? In 1966, he then dubbed comedic lines onto a Japanese film. He retitled it What's Up Tiger Lily? After this, Allen did not work on films for three years. He returned to working on films with Take the Money and Run. This was a successful film where he played an inept crook.

He then wrote many hits and also starred in most of them. Here is a list of some of these movies:

Play It Again, Sam

Bananas

Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex (but Were Afraid to Ask)

Sleeper

Love and Death

Annie Hall

Allen's dark comedy began with Annie Hall. Other of his dark comedic works include Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters, Zelig, and The Purple Rose of Cairo. The last two movies illustrate how the movies seem to have taken place of the real world.

Allen is also the author of comedic short stories and sketches. Some of these are Getting Even, Without Feathers, and Side Effects.

Allen has had many different relationships. He has had relationships with Harlene Rosen, Louise Lasser, Diane Keaton, Stacey Nelkin, Mia Farrow, and Soon-Yi Previn.

Steve Allen is a passionate fan of jazz and he plays the clarinet. He even has a New Orleans style Jazz band. His band plays every night at the Carlyle Hotel. They have even released two CDs: The Bunk Project and the soundtrack to Wild Man Blues.
