Designer Breed Dogs - The Puggle

Designer dogs, in particular the Puggle, what are they and are they worth the money? Are these dogs better than their purebred parents?

What is a Puggle

The Puggle is half beagle and half pug. 1st generation puggles are bred from purebred parents while 2nd generation puggles have puggles as parents. This is a fairly new breed of dog and not all the facts are in, but 2nd generation dogs pose even more questions than there are answers. The 1st generation puggle, which is what is being talked about in the remainder of this article, can be bred by either a male beagle/female pug pair or a female beagle/male pug pair. Typically, the beagle is the mother as it is easier for her to give birth to the size of the puggle puppy. Pug puppies are generally smaller than puggle puppies, therefore, it would be more difficult on a female pug to give birth to puggles, although it is possible. Puggle puppies are a variety of colors, typically fawn, tan, black and any combination of the three.

Benefits of a Designer Dog

The benefits are that for whatever reason, puggles tend to inherit the more favorable traits of it's parents and leave the unfavorable traits behind. Puggles are fun loving, energetic dogs who love to play and also love to cuddle. They are very sociable animals and prefer being with you but are fine left alone. They like to be busy and if left to find their own entertainment they might dig and/or chew. When provided with distraction they do very well, i.e., chew toys and exercise. Puggles are quite smart and easy to train, a good puppy training class will help them learn to be sociable with other dogs and humans. This is good for them and they do enjoy it. Unlike the Pug, Puggles can withstand being in the heat. They do not have the short snout that pugs have and therefore do not have the same breathing problems. While some puggles do bark or howl (like beagles) most are fairly quiet. Both beagles and pugs tend to have genetic eye disorders, puggles on the other hand tend to not inherit these and are typically quite healthy dogs.
