Learning you have diabetes can be one of the scariest moments of your life. You have no idea what to expect from that point on. You have no idea what you should do. And, many times, your doctor is not very forthcoming with facts that will ease your mind. Here are some tips to let you know what should happen during visits to your doctor.

There are several types of doctor that can treat patients for diabetes. These include internists, family practitioners, general practitioners, endocrinologists, or diabetologists. Some of these doctors specialize in diabetes and similar diseases, some do not. Any of these doctors can help you with your disease, but endocrinologists and diabetologists might have more information since they are experts in this, and similar, diseases.

During your first visit after being diagnosed with diabetes there are many questions your doctor should ask. He may ask when you found out you had diabetes and want to look at the results of any lab tests. Any family history of diabetes should be on your record, as well.

How you treat your diabetes and what you eat are important facts for your doctor to know. It is also important for your doctor to know how often and hard you exercise, what your weight is, and if you smoke. High blood pressure and high cholesterol are conditions that are important for your doctor to be aware of. Your doctor should be aware of any other medical conditions you may have.

If you are taking any drugs or treatments your doctor will want to know about them. He will also check your eyes, mouth, heart, hands, fingers and bare feet. If you are experiencing certain side effects, this thorough physical check will give your doctor an idea of the extent of your condition. Blood and urine tests will probably also be required.

Takeaways
  • You should feel comfortable enough with your doctor to ask any questions you have.
  • Many types of doctors can treat diabetes.

My mother has lived with this for many years and now in her 80's. Living within the limitations is freeing when you find out how healthy you can become despite this happening in your body. It is very manageable and much luck is wished if you are one to experience it. Good article for someone freshly diagnosed.

I've been diabetic for over 40 years and when I think back how frightened I was then, I can relate to how you felt. Don't let it scare you, just learn to live with your limitations and you will do just fine. It doesn't mean giving up life or food, it is about eating and taking care of yourself.
