If you're constantly on the go, or if you do a fair share of traveling either by car, train or airplane and find yourself wanting something to do to fill those empty hours with, then a travel chess set may be the perfect companion for you.

Travel chess sets are compact and are very useful for playing while on the move. Some are as small as 3 inches! They are fairly inexpensive and are both a fun and educational way to offer many hours of fun for all of the family, from children to adults.
Travel chess sets also make great gifts for any occasion, whether it be a birthday, wedding, or if you're just wanting to give a gift to a special friend.
Travel chess sets containing diminutive (notably small) magnetic pieces also come in pocket sizes for long trips and there are an unlimited amount of different versions available in today's marketplace.

Many people believe that chess is the oldest game known to man and although it appears that no one knows exactly how the game of chess began, it can be linked back many centuries to a board game, called Chaturanga (played on an 8x8 uncheckered board), from either the sixth or seventh century, (possibly as early as the 4th century) from India. It's possible that it may of originated from even an earlier game from China.
It was eventually introduced into medieval Europe around the 15th century via the many trade routes and also by the earlier invasions of Spain and Sicily. Chess is a game that is played throughout the entire world and comes in many different variations of themes, colors and pieces such as the Civil War, Samurai and King Arthur themes.

Learning to play chess all starts with becoming familiar with the game pieces. It is also a game that can teach your children important life skills such as problem solving, concentration and strategies.

Chess sets (referred to as a chess board and chess pieces) also come in a wide range of prices. The larger, stationary chess sets are the most expensive. Depending on which type and style of the travel chess set that you choose, they will usually start somewhere between $10 to $15.
