Neopets! Is it safe?

Neopets.com is an online virtual pet game for both children and adults. It has over 1 billion pets and over 900 million users. With that many users and a mixture of adults and children can it really be safe for your child? Neopets.com claims to be a very safe environment for children, but how safe is it? What type of precautions are they using? How is Neopets protecting your children when you are unable to monitor their computer activities?

Well, I have been playing Neopets for over 5 years. I started in high school and I now an avid Neopets player! I have yet to see such a site with this many users as safe as Neopets. Neopets does go the extra mile to insure that your child is safe while on their site.

Verifying Age

From the very beginning of becoming a Neopets member, they insure the safety of your child. When signing up for Neopets, you child has to enter their birthday and their age. By doing this it helps to confirm your child's age. At the end of the process you also have to select an age group (ie. 4-13yrs, 16-18yrs, 18 and older). If your child is younger then 13 years old they will be required to have written permission from a parent or guardian mailed to Neopets in order to receive certain features of the game.

Neomail

After creating an account, if your child is 13 years or younger, neomail will not be allowed. Neopets will not allow any player 13 years old or younger, to use neomail. Neomail is just like e-mail except that it only goes to and from Neopets users. If your child isn't old enough the feature will be disabled for them and will notify anyone trying to message them that there message will not be delivered. In addition to this safety feature, Neopets will not allow ANY member to use any obscene, racial, or abusive language. Doing so will get your account frozen.

Neopets is very safe for kids as long as they dont lie about their age.

If a parent is truly worried about a child's internet safety they have programs that can monitor all computers on your LAN, and allow you to use remote-desktop on demand and see a screenshot of that person's monitor. It's used in all the schools in my area.

No, I don't think nearly 1 of every 6 people on earth plays neopets.

Neopets does do a very good job of protecting children. However, while not unsuitable, I do find *some* of the advertisments a little questionable. Never having played on an account that wasn't in the 18+ bracket, I don't know if the advertising is the same for all age groups, but I would be inclined to get the premium account if I had a younger child playing neopets (it removes all advertisments) Go Neo!

I've been a fan of Neopets for years! It is great that they offer so many ways to protect kids, but parents shouldn't rely on a site to ensure their child's protection. Internet use should still be monitored even if they are only on "safe" sites.

Great article! I'm trying to find a fun way to introduce my 5 year old daughter to the internet and computer. I know, we're already a few years behind, and from your article, this could be a good site.

My daughter plays there with her friends. And while they do alot to ensure safety of the kids, NOTHING replaces a parents watchful eye :) Wish more sites would follow the neopet way!

Neopets is a great website. When I first started playing, I was 14. I'm now 18. I haven't been on in awhile, but I heard they've done a lot of updates!

Wow it's nice to know that they block out the features that really would lead to potential predators going after children. If they can't be contacted there's no reason to even use the site at all to prey on children! Good on NeoPets for trying. You can't always protect kids 100% but you sure can try and they certainly seem like they are!
