Homework can be (and usually is) one of those dreaded things that kids hate to do. But there are things us parents can do to make homework less stressful for both our children and ourselves. With these tips homework can become a hassle-free, and possibly even fun, part of your child's day.

Tip 1: Create a workstation-

Create or set aside a special area for your child to do his or her homework at. Make sure that it is somewhere away from the television and any other distractions that may take their attention away from what they're supposed to be doing. Whether it's at the kitchen table or their own private desk in their bedroom, a workstation is an absolute must if you want to create a good homework environment for your child.

Tip 2: Make a homework supply kit-

It's not uncommon for a parent to be out of certain supplies that your child may need for specific homework assignments. Unfortunately, us parents don't find out our kids are in need of these things until the day that they bring the homework home. Having a supply kit will prevent these frustrating situations from occurring. Make a list of any supplies you think your child may need for homework assignments and go purchase them. The kit should include basic things such as crayons, glue, pencils, pens, a pencil sharpener, colored pencils, a ruler, a dictionary, loose-leaf paper, scissors, paper clips, a stapler and staples, erasers and any other supply you can think of that they may need. You can also include useful things that they bring home from school such as flash cards and spelling words. Once you purchase all of the supplies, put them in a shoebox or a storage bin and put them up somewhere safe where only you can get to them. This will keep the kids from getting into it for reasons other than homework.

Tip 3: Help your child when they need it-

Takeaways
  • Create a quiet workstation for your child to go to do homework
  • Create a homework kit with essential supplies that your child may need for homework assignments
  • Check over your child's work when they are finished so they can correct mistakes

I love the homework supply kit also Joyce. My son just started first grade and the teacher suggested we start a kit. It has been a great tool for both me and him when it comes to keeping homework necessities organized.

Great tips. I think it is important for parents to be involved in their childs homework. The line stops though when parents start doing projects for them... That said I hate when schools assign projects that they know the kids will likely need parental help with...
