If you've noticed a shrimp which looks like it has veins, it's called the Peppermint Shrimp. This shrimp is not like any other saltwater shrimp because it wont eat fish flakes, brine shrimp or mysis shrimp. You must cut up little pieces of fresh fish and give it to this shrimp. It's not as easy to take care of as the other types of common saltwater shrimp. This shrimp is still pretty popular because it's a peaceful shrimp. It will not fight with other shrimp but if it's smaller than other shrimp in your tank you might often find that the larger shrimp will fight with your Peppermint Shrimp. It's best to find one type of shrimp that you like and make sure that you can have several in your saltwater tank. This shrimp is not hard to keep alive if you have the time to feed it chopped up fish. You will want to keep your salinity in your fish tank at around 1.022 to 1.026. You will also want to keep the temperature at around 72 to 76 degrees. You will also want to do water changes at least once every two weeks. Only siphon half of the substrate so that the beneficial bacteria colony remains after cleaning your fish tank. If you can do all of these things than you will not have a problem keeping your Peppermint Shrimp healthy.
This shrimp will not destroy your reef tank. You wont have any problems with it eating off pieces of your hard coral and soft coral. You can also place it with other type of invertebrates as long as you check to make sure that they will get along well with the Peppermint Shrimp. I like shrimp, hermit crabs and snails because you don't need to buy extra things for them such as supplements like you would coral. You can simply purchase them and their food and you wont have to remember to add supplements each time that you clean your fish tank.
