I believe that Jesus puts people in our path. Sometimes He does it for us and sometimes He does it for the other person. And sometimes I think it is actually Him there, but not recognizable to us.
There was a woman who drove into a gas station. She filled her car and went inside to pay. She knew the owners and stood for a while "chatting".
There was a man standing off in the corner. One of the owners made unkind remarks about his appearance. She also felt he was bad for business by hanging around.
The man had an old car full of stuff parked by the side of the gas station. The owner said he was out of money for gas.
About this time, the man approached the customer who had just paid for her gas. He asked politely if he could borrow some money for gas. The owner was aghast.
Without thinking, the customer reached into her pocket and took all the money she had out. She smiled and put it into his outreached, unscrubbed hands.
The grateful man smiled from one ear to the other. He thanked her until it embarrassed her. He filled his car and down the road he went.
The owner chided the customer for her actions. She said 'ya know, you will never get repaid, he is a stranger passing through.'
The woman knew she would not get her money back. But she gave it knowing she wouldn't. Why?
Had Jesus placed the woman there for that hard-on-his luck man? Or, was Jesus there in that gas station? Was HE the stranger? Was He checking out the heart of the woman customer? Or was He checking out the heart of the gas station owner?
The woman customer has always had the "feeling" that she encountered Jesus that day. Out of nowhere, and with no crisis at hand, she believes that that was Jesus.
Does Jesus literally walk among us? And at times, when we least expect it, does He try our hearts?
Skeptics would say the woman was a push over. That Jesus does not, cannot and would not, walk among us.
