Moving to LA was a predicament for me. Moving to LA with zero dollars was an even larger predicament. Throughout the years, I successfully furnished my cozy little apartment with very very little money. My course of action? FREE STUFF, and if it's not free, cheap is the next best thing.

Head to the library to hop on the computer and look up www.craigslist.com Whether you are searching for an apartment, job, of coffee maker, it's bound to be there. Craig's List in an on line classifieds that has links to every state and city in the United States, and over 50 countries. A lot of people offer furniture, refrigerators, pets cages, etc for free for whomever will pick it up. If you have a little money to play with you can shop for exactly what you are looking for.

Another good place to look is the Recycler of Penny Saver, or a magazine that is similar. Most larger cities, and several small cities have a weekly circulation with items of all kinds listed. If there isn't a magazine like that, pick up the Sunday paper and look in the classifieds. Concentrate on people who are moving. They are usually trying to rid themselves of things quickly and will knock even more off their prices.

Keep an eye out for moving sales, garage sales and estate sales. If you head in early you will have your pick of the liter, but if you can wait till the end of the day, people are usually so desperate to get rid of stuff they will sell their items to you at half price. Again, moving sales are key. If they have to pack up and move, they'll be grateful for one less thing to travel with.

Most cities have swap meets. You have to be careful where you go, because some are rather overpriced, but occasionally you are bound to find a good deal. Stay away from "trendy" meets. If you look at swap meets at the outskirts of town, or ones that offer a variety of things, you will have better luck.

We found our brand new furniture from a store that was having a normal day of sales. We went straight to the back of the store where there is usually discounted items. Our personal furniture come into the store the wrong color for a client so we purchased it for 1/3 of the original price. THere are always discounts on items that are slightly scratched and etc too in the back. :)
