5 Safe Alternatives to Pumpkin Carving: Halloween Activities for Toddlers

Carving pumpkins in front of a toddler may be frustrating for the little one who loves to be involved and imitate other family members. Instead of telling a toddler that he or she is too little, or it's too dangerous, why not save the pumpkin carving for the
older kids and the adults, and try one of these safer alternatives to carving. These Halloween activities involve safe ways for toddlers to decorate pumpkins this Autumn and this Halloween.

Halloween Activities for Toddlers

1. Paint a Favorite Ball

By purchasing a small pumpkin, the toddler will have a kid-sized canvas to paint. Turn the pumpkin into your child's favorite ball: basketball, baseball, soccer ball. Let them paint the entire pumpkin then help the toddler paint on the designs.

2. Make a Mr. Pumpkin Head

Again, use a small sugar pumpkin and then take a nature walk with the toddler. Collect leaves, branches, acorn caps, twigs, and any other natural Autumn items.

Houshold items to add include beans and nut shells.

Create funny faces and characters with the natural items by attaching them to the pumpkin. If you can find sewing Velcro, that would work best. Attach a piece to the pumpkin and to the object.

Another way to attach the items is with a toothpick. Let the toddler show you where to put an item, and let the adults handle the toothpicks, which can be sharp.

A third alternative for attaching the natural objects for this toddler Halloween activity is to use glue dots.

3. Reverse Stencil a Halloween Jack-o-Lantern

Another safe alternative to pumpkin carving this Halloween is to a Jack-o-Lantern on the pumpkin. Create a reverse stencil by masking out certain areas of the pumpkin.

Use tape to attach poster board eyes, a nose and a mouth, and let the toddler paint all around it. When the paint is dry, remove the paper. Your left with a Halloween Jack-o-Lantern. The lines may not be exact, but it will like a real Jack-o-Lantern that way.

4. Halloween Stamp Activity

Pour some poster paint onto a paper plate. Take an old or inexpensive set of small Halloween cookie cutters, and let the toddler dip them in poster paint. Show the toddler how to "stamp" the image onto the pumpkin.
