There are things that you should find out if you are concerned about them. I will be listing a few things for you to ask about and why you should ask them so that you can make the right decision when choosing a nursing home.

Does the nursing home Medicaid or Medicare certified?

This is important for those of you who are on Medicaid or Medicare. Some facilities will only take residents who are covered by certain types of insurance and it is best to find out what kind of coverage that you must have before deciding that this is the nursing home that you want.

Does the nursing home have the level of care that I need?

Depending on the individual needs of yourself, you will be able to determine if this facility has the right type of care that you need. Some facilities will only take low risk residents and others have separate rooms for individuals so that they can meet their needs. If you are handicap, you may require a special need in your room or throughout the facility.

Is it close to my relatives?

This is an important question for obvious reasons. If you are closer to your family, it will be easier for them to see you or for you to see them. Most people will try to select a nursing home that is only thirty miles or less from their families homes so that the family can visit more often.

What do the residence look like?

You can always tell a lot about a nursing home by taking a tour and noticing the things around you. If the residences are well groomed and dressed for the weather, the nursing home shows care in the residence. If the residence are not properly dressed or groomed and left unattended, the nursing home is not worth the hassle. Pay attention to your surroundings when you visit the nursing home facilities.
