The mission is no small one: to provide two billion children in developing countries a way to learn, express themselves and explore the world on a 7.5 inch laptop screen - and build the XO laptop at a cost of $100 each. The One Laptop per Child (OLPC) program, founded by Nicholas Negroponte from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), drew skepticism from the technology community, saying it could not be done. Intel passed the $100 XO laptop off as a gadget and tried to derail the OLPC mission by launching its Classmate laptop.

At first, the $100 XO laptops were only going to be available to children with little or no access to education in developing countries. But Negroponte announced on the OLPC website that beginning November 12, you can "Give 1 Get 1" for a brief time period. The price of the laptop is $200, and from all test runs in both the United States and developing countries, kids love it and are learning.

A donation of $200 will send an XO laptop to a child in a developing nation. A donation of $400 will get one XO laptop for YOUR child and one XO laptop donated to a child in a developing nation. After you read what makes the XO laptop a technology marvel, you may want to add this to your list of Christmas presents this year.

The History of the "$100 XO Laptop"

In 2005, Negroponte debuted his marvel "$100 XO laptop", dubbed the "green machine", at the United Nations World Summit on the Information Society. UN Secretary General Kofi Annan viewed a prototype of the robust XO laptop as an "expression of global solidarity." The OLPC $100 laptop project also drew support from media mogul Rupert Murdoch.

In July 2007, Intel had a change of heart and joined the OLPC mission along with 11 other companies including Google, Red Hat and AMD. Finally, the XO laptop marvel machine was finished - an amazing technology accomplishment on many levels. Both the XO laptop and the Classmate have compatible applications, what will run on one will run on the other.

Why is the "$100 XO Laptop" a Marvel Machine?

can computers be given to pupils in the united ststes?

Very interesting. However, they won't be able to play computer games that require a cd drive. It looks like it's mainly good for report-writing, music, and internet surfing. Although, there isn't much space to store music, so the kids won't be able to have alot of music on there. I think it's a great idea, but just wonder if there is another way to make it that would allow for more options.

The features are peculiarly combined- some very high quality and some low. I wonder how this thing works.

Hmmmm . . . Yeah! Where's the version of this for the bottom dwelling educational mess in the states of MS, AZ, LA, and others of the No Child Left Behind 'mess' that our dear USA government created?! Boy, oh Boy! Can our kids use this or what!?!?!

Great article! I just read an article about the XO in eWeek. They claim this laptop has so many great features it could actually revolutionize the whole laptop industry. I'm convinced.

Interesting stuff. Too bad US children and adults can't get the same deal.

Hmmmm I may just go for this 2-for-400 deal. I'll go check into it a bit more, but I like what I'm hearing in this article.

The wealth of information that can be provided to those whose world is still small and consists of everything close by can be broadened by this technology. As for kids in the US, parents can opt for a desktop for little more than many game systems. We do have underprivileged kids. I work with them every day, but I also see that we have more options and often choose wants over needs. I think the purpose of the laptops is to assist with education. Education is the key to social revolution and the ladder out of poverty, if it is recieved and applied.
