Jack Cafferty on CNN is doing what he can to expose a little known fact about President Bush bill in Congress, which will redefine the rules and laws that affect the treatment of detainees. There are very few people that know that there is a small section of this bill that will pardon President Bush and his entire Administration for any crimes that they have committed in the unethical treatment of detainees dating back to 9/11.The War Crimes Act has provisions that severely punish anyone who goes against the standards of the Geneva Convention. There are crimes that can be committed that can be punishable by death. The bill that President Bush is pushing through Congress will change many of these penalties.
If it were to be found in the future that President Bush or a member of his Administration committed a crime by allowing detainees to be tortured or killed, they would be tried under the War Crimes Act since the crimes would have preceded the new bill. This would mean that whoever committed the war crime could face the severe penalties, or even be sentenced to death.
In the past, President Bush has stated that no member of his Administration, or himself, have committed any crimes that would conflict with the War Crimes Act. If this were true, why would he need to put this provision in his bill about the treatment of detainees? If no crime was ever committed, why would he need a pardon provision?
For the first time in history, a President is doing what he can to make sure that he can pardon himself of a crime. This is another example of the Bush Administration trying to use the laws in the United States to their advantage. It is also another example of the Bush Administration of trying to rewrite the law so that they can cover up issues that could come back to bite them.
