Earlier this year, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg launched PlaNYC, a wide-ranging strategy to make New York City a truly and sustainable green city. The plan consists of 127 initiatives that the city will roll out in the coming months. Part of the Plan is GreeNYC, the integrated marketing and advertising campaign that is the consumer education component of PlaNYC.

GreeNYC outlines simple steps New Yorkers can take to reduce pollution and greenhouse gasses, and to create a greener city. But these steps aren't just for New Yorkers - they are great guidelines for people around the country to follow. After all, the whole world can benefit from these steps, and they can save consumers money. And they are simple steps - you don't have to go out of your way to implement them. Convenient, easy, money saving - and they help the environment, you can't go wrong with that!

The television advertising campaign can be seen nationally, featuring a cute bird who demonstrates the GreeNYC tips:

  1. Switch to ENERGY STAR® qualified Compact Fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs).
  2. Buy ENERGY STAR® appliances.
  3. Don't air condition an empty room.
  4. Unplug chargers and appliances when not in use.
  5. Switch to a green energy provider.
  6. Walk or take public transportation.
  7. Recycle your glass, metal, paper and plastic.
  8. Bring your own cloth bag to the grocery store.
  9. Use green cleaning products.
  10. Switch to paperless bank statements and online bill paying.

So take the Bird's advice and follow these simple steps to help your community go green.

The Plan says that each New Yorker's small steps, put together, will add up to big strides. Well, what if everybody in the United States takes those small steps as well? That will add up to big strides for the whole country!
