Lesson Plan for Teaching Students How to Write Realistic Fiction Book Reports

Realistic fiction books are stories that are part real and part made-up. They have characters that remind you of people you know. These characters have realistic problems to solve. Made-up details and events add suspense or humor to the story.

Directions for writing your report:

Write your name and the date on the top line. Write the title of the book on the second line. Underline the title. Write the author's name on the third line. Skip one line before you start the first paragraph. Indent every paragraph. Each paragraph must have three to five complete sentences. This book report may be handwritten in cursive or typed. Keep within the red margins of your notebook paper if it is handwritten. Use only the front sides of the paper. Let your parents look over your rough draft to help you check for misspelled words or incorrect sentence structure before your final copy is typed or handwritten. If you are absent the day the report is due, plan to turn it in the first day you come back. Ten points will be taken off for every day the report is late. Be prepared to share your report with the class.

First paragraph

Write about the main character(s) of the book. Describe each one. Tell their names, and how the characters are related to each other. For example, are they family members, friends, or enemies? Help us to get to know the characters through your writing.

Second paragraph

Write about the setting of the story. The time could be a certain year, modern or pioneer days, etc. or any other times that are mentioned in the book. The place could be a specific location, the country, a city, or a school, or whatever evidence that gives you an idea of where the story occurred.

Third paragraph

Write about the plot, which consists of the main events that take place in the story. Write about really important happenings, not unnecessary details. The main idea of the story - - for example, the problem.

Fourth paragraph

Write about the conclusion of the book. Tell what happened to each of the main characters. Tell how any problems were solved.
