This quick scarecrow costume is a great idea for a boy or girl and can be assembled in a short amount of time for little cost. Most items are readily available from any craft or fabric supply store.

Supplies Needed:

Pre-made long-sleeved shirt, preferably a plaid print. For girls, look for pink or purple plaid prints. For boys, look for blue, green, or orange plaid prints. Check your local thrift store for a good price on second-hand shirts.

Pre-made denim overalls. Overalls can also be purchased for a good price at your local thrift store.

Pre-made straw or felt hat. These are available in your local craft store.

Raffia - either the real straw raffia or you can buy artificial raffia trim that can be sewn on at your local fabric and craft store

Small scraps of fabric

Halloween face paints

Glue

Sewing thread, needle, and scissors

Assorted Halloween decorations such as artificial sunflowers, a crow, or other accent items for your local craft store

Take the plaid shirt and glue or sew raffia trim around the inside edge of each sleeve cuff. Leave at least an inch of raffia to poke out from the sleeve cuff. Work with your child to determine how much raffia you want to show. Be sure to let it dry completely.

If your child will tolerate it, glue or sew some of the raffia around the neck of the shirt. Some children may want to skip this step as the raffia may be too itchy.

Take the denim overalls and glue or sew the raffia trim around the inside edge of each leg hem. Again, you want to make sure that at least an inch of the raffia shows on the outside. Take some raffia into bunches and glue it inside of each front pocket of the overalls to look like scarecrow stuffing.

Take the small scraps of fabric and cut them into five regular patches about 1.5 by 3 inches long. Sew or glue three of the patches onto the front of the denim overalls in random order. Sew or glue the last two patches onto the back of the denim overalls. You can use Halloween print fabric or plaid fabric for the patches, available from your local fabric or craft store.
