Freelance writing can be very rewarding. You can work from your home in your pajamas if you like. There is no commuting expense. There are no special clothes you are required to buy and wear. But, there are pitfalls. It is very easy to become distracted by mundane things happening around you. Here are some tips to keep your mind focused and keep the words flowing from your fingertips.

The hardest part of working from home, for me, is to keep focused on the project at hand. I find it very easy to make excuses and let myself be distracted. I can work on the article after this television show is over with. One hour will not make that much difference. I can look for a picture to go with my finished article after I was the dishes. It won't hurt to wait until the laundry is done. What will 2 more hours hurt? I work from home and I have all day to get things done.

But, the day gets away from you. At the end of the day I have clean dishes, clean laundry, a cleaner house and I've watched a lot of television. But, I have, maybe, one or two articles done. That just won't do. This is a job and you should treat it as one.

So, I developed a strategy to help me facilitate my writing and get the number of articles I want produced. I have learned to do what I can to minimize distractions and get the articles done. Then, I can work on housework or watch television or do whatever I would like to be doing.

I recommend minimizing the potential for distractions. I have to make myself not turn on the television in my office. I try to listen to music instead of having a program playing in the background. It is much easier to listen to music and write than to try and keep up with what is going on in a movie or program. If it is possible, try to go to a quiet place in your home to write. Or it would be best to choose a time when your children are at school or napping. Anything you can do to minimize distractions will help the creative juices start to flow.

Great tips. I sometimes start several articles, and I create an outline first - usually in the evening before bed. The next day I work on them in no particular order. I usually choose the subjects I find easiest to write about first. My biggest problem is thinking of article topics and forgetting them before I have a chance to write them down. This is going to sound strange, but I think of many of my topics while showering. I need a waterproof notepad! LOL
