Could Your Lack of Energy Be a Symptom of Depression?

Do you feel tired much of the time? Life can be complicated with lots of disappointments and set backs that can temporarily zap your energy and enthusiasm. When tiredness and fatigue persist over several weeks, it can be sign of depression.

It's important to note that any time you experience fatigue lasting more than two weeks or if you have other symptoms of illness that you see your doctor for a full exam. If no medical cause is found and you're still devoid of energy, you may want to consider the possibility that you're suffering from the symptoms of depression.

What are the signs and symptoms of depression other than fatigue and lack of energy? The symptoms of depression can sometimes be subtle and easily attributed to other causes. Common symptoms of depression include:

Sleep Difficulties

If you have problems falling asleep or finding yourself waking up prematurely in the morning with the inability to go back to sleep, you should consider the possibility of depression.

Changes in Appetite

Depression can sometimes present as binge eating or eating more than usual. It can also manifest with a loss of appetite and a reduced interest in food and eating. Symptoms of depression can also include changes in weight, either an increase or decrease.

Self Esteem Problems

If you're suffering from depression, you may unfairly criticize yourself and feel you're unable to do anything right. This may be associated with crying spells and difficulties concentrating on or completing a task.

Loss of Sexual Interest

This is very commonly seen in persons suffering from depression. This may be expressed as a loss of desire or as problems with self esteem, believing that you're not attractive enough.

Loss of Interest in Activities

Persons suffering from symptoms of depression may lose interest in activities that previously brought them pleasure.

Thoughts of Inflicting Harm on Self

This is the most serious symptoms of depression. You may entertain thoughts of suicide or express a desire to die or harm yourself in some way. It's important if you experience any of these symptoms that you seek medical help immediately.
